You may have heard of kawaii before but if you haven’t let me explain. Kawaii is a Japanese word that translates to cute but can have various meanings. Kawaii culture is a subculture built around this idea of cuteness and loveability. I’ll be covering many aspects of it on this blog so this post will just be a quick rundown of the basics.
What can be considered kawaii?
Many things are considered kawaii and it depends on who you ask. Typically small things are considered kawaii as are feminine things, sparkly things, pastel things, colorful things, nostalgic things, fluffy things, and animals. It has a certain kind of energy to it that can be hard to put into words. Many people love this energy so much they choose to make it a lifestyle! I am one of those people. Let’s go over different aspects of living the kawaii life.
Food
An essential part of survival is food so I’ll cove it first. Remember you aren’t a fake just because your food isn’t cute! It can just be very fun to have your food match your aesthetic! If you go online or visit an Asian grocery store you might find lots of cute snacks and candies with adorable characters and fun colors! These are great for snacks and treats but did you know healthy meals can be cute too? If you search up kyaraben you’ll find lots of cute examples of this and you can find cookbooks that teach you how to make them!
Music
Kawaii music is typically happy and bouncy but there are multiple different genres including j pop. Here are a few artists that you can look into to get started. MYLK, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Babymetal, Haruka Kurebayashi, and CHAI, a neo kawaii band.
Clothing, hair, and makeup
The way you present yourself is a big part of kawaii culture! There are lots of different styles and subcultures you can look into such as fairy kei, decora, lolita, pop kei, party kei, gyaru, and many others! You don’t have to fit a subculture though. You can just be your own kind of kawaii but you can look to these styles and others for inspiration. Clothing is often girly but doesn’t have to be as long as it has cute colors, fun patterns and textures, and adorable characters. Makeup can be done lots of ways but it typically accentuates the eyes and has blush. Hair can be dyed or natural and some popular hairstyles are curls, pigtails, side ponytails, braids, bobs, and space buns.
Media
Yes. Kawaii culture has its own media too! There was a tv show called kawaii i that sadly has ended but you can still watch previous episodes and watch their YouTube! Anime also has lots of cute shows like lucky star and sailor moon. A popular movie that features lolita fashion is called kamikaze girls. You can also turn to YouTube with channels like pixielocks, cybr grl, and kawaii pateen. There are also magazines such as egg, kei club, kera, papillon and fruits, with a new one starting up called peanut
Interior design
Sometimes it’s nice to have a cute space to live in and be constantly surrounded by the things that make you happy! You can go on Pinterest for inspiration and you can also find cute house , room, and apartment tours on YouTube.
Hobbies
You don’t need to have a cute hobby but they can be fun. You can collect cute and fancy knickknacks or visit cute places such as maid cafes! You can even start a blog like this one! You can also have a cute job by working at a cute cafe or working at a cute store! You can even start your own brand!
That was just a quick little guide but there’s much more to learn and do so get out there and start living your cutest and best life!
